(September 30th, 1881-October 17th, 1973)

Marta Gahn was a Swedish textile artist and a master weaver. She was responsible for creating some of the first printed fabrics featuring Scandinavian art deco designs. Gahn attended the Stockholm School of Higher Art and Design from 1910 to 1915. She exhibited internationally and was one of the several Swedish weavers who had work selected for the International Exhibition of 1925 held in Paris, France. She was also showing work in Musée des Arts Décoratifs for a 1927 exhibition dedicated to Northern European rugs.

Marta was represented by the Society of Swedish Homecraft as a master weaver, and always intialled her original works with M.G. Gahn’s work is representative of important developments in the textile industry especially in mid-century Scandinavian design. Her designs are traditional yet modern, and her bright color palette brings life into her pieces. She is one of the outstanding Swedish rug designers and a uniquely talented figure in the textile industry.
